Fagopyrum dibotrys & Thieves’ Bone

Fagopyrum dibotrys (D. Don) Hara, English name wild buckwheat, is a perennial herb in the Polygonaceae family, as Polygonum cuspidatum from which our trans-resveratrol extracted, both Rhizomes are woody and yellowish, stems are erect, up to 100 cm tall, leaf is triangular-shaped; Flowers are white, petals are long oval shaped, achenes are broadly ovate, flowering in July to September, fruiting in August - October.

Wild buckwheat is distributed widely in East China, Central China, South China and Southwest China. Chinese name is 金荞麦(Golden buckwheat).

 

At first, I would tell you an interesting story on Fagopyrum dibotrys. In ancient China, hard to know from which dynasty the story began, it was said that some thieves made living by stealing, it was a risky business, they were often caught in red hand, and they were often beaten severely, but they were found soon after their severe wound and came back to their job again, why the thieves’ bone recovered so quickly? They were found to use a herb’s rhizome to treat their wounded bones and muscles, as the rhizome looks like bone, with bigger joints, so the herb was given a folk name Thieves’ Bone. And from then on, the herb’s rhizome was used for bone fracture, would and injury. That herb is wild buckwheat, Fagopyrum dibotrys.

 

Wild buckwheat tender stem and leaf is a vegetable for Chinese, also a good feed for animals, it is believed to have the good effects for pulmonary carbuncle, cough and asthma, sour and swollen throat, dysentery, rheumatism syndrome, injury and wound, Carbuncle, snake and insect bites,lung abscess, measles pneumonia, peripheral tonsil abscess, rheumatic joint pain.

 

As a traditional Chinse herb, it is believed to has the functions of clearing heat and detoxifying, promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, invigorating spleen and enhancing dampness. The dosage for internal use: decoction, take dry rhizome 15-30g boiled in water, take the cool decoction; for external use: appropriate amount of fresh rhizome, mashed and coated the wound with juice.

Modern science reveals Golden buckwheat contains shakuchirin. This glycosides can be hydrolyzed to P-coumaric acid, ferulic acid and glucose. It also contains epicatechin, 3-galloyl epicatechin, dimeric procyanidin, hecogenin, β-sitosterol, tannin, etc.

 

Modern researches show Buckwheat had inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It was also reported that buckwheat and its isolated parts had no antibacterial effect in vitro.
